Clay golem

Sickness. Dying. Death.

Rebirth in the soil I was buried in.
This new form. Shuffle. Lift. Crush.
A great weight. Move. Break. Stand. Kill.

Awakening. This new form is not where my spirit belongs. This small, imperious man is not my master.

"Did you hear what happened to the mad old wizard at the edge of town?"
"Aye. . . I hear the biggest chunk they found was no bigger than this
ale-flagon."

I'm inordinately proud of this guy, so there will be many pictures. . . .
This is Reaper's clay golem (officially named Schindal), sculpted by Jason Wiebe. I really like the pose and expression of this piece.
I wanted to expand on the painting tricks that seemed to work in the charnel grub, so I figured I'd try and apply some stylized highlights again. (I debated converting the open hand, but decided against it, for once.) I started with the old Reaper reddish brown, which is quickly becoming a standby color for me (despite the fact that I can't remember its name). From that, I worked up to several different yellow colors, using gradual layering to build up the color.

When that was to my liking, I decided to try something that I really like the look of, but hadn't attempted previously: I washed a dark complementary color into the recesses of the miniature. I used a thin glaze, and put on 4 or 5 layers (I think) in the areas where I wanted the purple to be more pronounced.

I painted up the loincloth in a shade that would stand out, lined it, and painted up the base.
As I said, I'm quite happy with the way he turned out. He represents a step forward in my painting, which is encouraging, because my progress is slow. :)

The photographs were taken in my backyard. I needed something for the miniature to stand on, so I decided to use a (rather crappy) clay pot that I'd made. It seemed appropriate, given the subject, and I like the way the background looks.
As always, comments are appreciated -- check the main page for details, view him at CMON, or hit me up on one of the Yahoogroups I frequent. :)
