Flesh golem

(18 Oct 06)

Stipple and Erodon sat at the bar, musing their next step.

"Retirement was kind of nice," offered Stipple.  "I got to sleep late.  I could tend to my garden.  I wasn't constantly being devoured by. . . things."

Erodon nodded slowly, then turned to face the halfling.  "But where was the excitement in that?  Where was the adventure?  Where was the sense that you'd never know what was going to happen next?"

Stipple shrugged.  The two turned turned back to their mugs of ale.

Behind them, the door banged open, letting in a chill wind from outside.  A hulking figure lumbered in, bringing with him a chill colder than the night air, and a smell like compost and rotting eggs.

All eyes turned towards the figure, and every voice was silent.  The man -- or the creature -- walked with a stiff and unnatural gait.  The patrons of the bar strained to see his face, hidden from the warm light of the fire.

The bartender squinted as the man-thing's face came into the light.  He paled, then shivered, then smiled.

"Uncle Zarfish!" he roared.  "I was reasonably sure you were dead, what with the funeral and all."

"Experiment!" said Uncle Zarfish, his gray-green lips creaking as he mouthed the word.  "Mad wizard!  Boundaries not meant to be crossed by mortals!"

Uncle Zarfish waved as airily as he could, then dropped a sack of coins on the counter.  He looked around at the patrons, whose faces had paled considerably.

"Beer!" he yelled.  "For everyone!"

The patrons cheered.

I'd been wondering how to work Stipple and Erodon back into things.  :)

This week's Caja entry is a Reaper flesh golem, sculpted by Ben Siens.  (You can tell it's his because of the crazy bend, dynamic pose, and prominent musculature -- cool stuff.)

As I've been saying all along so far, I'm interested in pushing my skills.  With this guy, I wanted to further see what I could do with the extreme highlights and icky colors I started out with on the charnel grub.  (And again, I decided against trying to convert him.  It goes against my natural instincts, but I've got a project or two coming up that should more than make up for the stock minis so far.)

I started out with a dark green as a base for the flesh, then worked that up to a medium-to-light caucasian tone.  I kept the highlights pretty stark, leaving the lowlying areas quite dark.  The blends are pretty smooth at the upper layers, though.

I wasn't at all sure initially about the stitches, and tried several different things, even asking the mini-painter folks for help.  I finally decided to keep the purply-pink versions, and set them off with dark ink.

For the coat, I decided that he'd killed a lion (or his creator had, anyway ;).  I painted it an earthy yellow, then worked that up to ivory highlights.  His pants are a dark brown worked up to a medium gray.

I wanted a stark base to set him off, so I relied on mostly gray/brown colors, highlighting up to a gray/white, except for the one bone sculpted onto the base, which got a standard bone treatment.

He's on CMON as well.

With this guy finished, I'm going to start selling off painted miniatures on eBay to see how it goes.  I'll post an auction link as soon as I post the auctions.
