Week 28 (19 Jan - 25 Jan 2003)
Scarab beetle

The creature crawled through the sands, shrugging off the grains that blew in the stinging wind, ignoring the fiece heat of the sun -- proud emblem of the pharaohs, symbol of regeneration. It shone like gems as it moved resolutely along.
Until a heavy foot squashed it. The large armored orc looked down at the regal iridescent chitin and black-green good.
"Yuck," he said.

As is often the case with my sculpts, this guy grew out of some leftover putty. I played around with the small amount I had, settling on a scarab beetle as something appropriate to practice textures and small detail. I did the three body sections and all the textures in one go, then added the eyes later after the body had cured. When all that was done and I had some more leftover putty (a mix of green and brown this time) I cut three short wires last for the legs, which is about the best I've managed to do on insect-style legs so far. I cut a small round notch on either side of the thorax (sort of like fenders for the legs) and puttied them into place, then jammed the whole mess into the already-textured base. I retextured it a bit and let things go at that.

He's pretty small, as the scale shot shows. The smaller pic has the penny at near life-size on my monitor (800x600). The detail is shot, so it's a bit misleading from that standpoint. The eyes are hard to see in any of the pics, and were in fact a bit tough to see to get into place. Some brown putty or a mix would've helped, some information I've put to use on another sculpt or two.
I've got a few larger pieces coming together at last, along with the ViC and ViP pieces, so I ought to be caught up soon, barring further laziness on my part.
