Week 33 (23 Feb - 1 Mar 2003)

Hovercat

The gentle squeak of the electonic mouse's trackball was just enough noise.  With a smooth whir, the hovercat fired up and began to track its prey.

Not much to this week's piece, though I think it's a bit more interesting than this shot shows.  In addition to the Visions in Putty show's mechanical theme, the DCAreaMiniPaintingClub is doing a little sculpting challenge, with Alan J graciously volunteering to cast up people's pieces.  Katie O. put together a little mechanical mouse, so I figured I'd continue the spirit of sculpting cooperation and add in a small hovering cat to give chase.

The jaws are pretty rough -- I'm really having trouble getting rows of sharp teeth to look good.  I'll have to move to sculpting them individually, I think (though that might not work as well as I think).  The body is more satisfying -- I managed to get a nice smooth shape without sanding, and the hover base gives it a little extra bulk.  I haven't sculpted a connection, becuase I'm not really sure what the limitations of resin casting are.

This guy was sculpted on top of two lip balm lids, so he's pretty small.

Be sure to check out the work in progress gallery -- projects are a bit more substantial there this week.
