Week 45 (18 May - 24 May 2003)
Head

"Gods," said Stipple, and shuddered. The lantern light played back and forth over the hideous stony surface ahead of them.
"I don't like the looks of that," said Erodon.
"Nor I," said the slug. "Is it a sculpture or. . . ?"
With a long screeching creak, the jaws began to work themselves open, and the neck began to move, scattering dust.

Today's piece is a loose head -- I think it's my best work so far, but the pictures aren't working out so well.
I started out with a rough base made from green stuff, then plopped down the head as a way-too-large leftover lump of putty. I tacked it down to the base, then shaped it as best I could with no armature underneath. In doing so, I was able to exploit the organic quality of green stuff. It's possible to make facial expressions appear fairly naturally by stretching the putty, which is pretty neat. I need some more practice, though. I finished up the main part of the head by texturing it lightly with a sharp-edged tool.
I dented out an area for the eyes, and just put in a small amount of putty, into which I sculpted wrinkles and closed eyes. I added in green stuff gums next, followed by brown stuff teeth.

The whole process went along fairly quickly, and I gained some confidence in making faces. I might try a larger-scale piece soon, and I'll try to incorporate some of what I've learned here.
