Week 46 (25 May - 31 May 2003)

Wood man

The tall, gangly figure creaked and clattered as he joined the halfling and the elf.  The creature's eyes bulged, and his severe underbite worked in his alien jaw.  His lumpy hands gestured vaguely.

"Gnah," he said.  "Gnah gnah gnah."

The halfling looked to the elf, one eyebrow raised.  "Can you understand him?"

"Just because I'm an elf, I can understand every creature that comes up to us in the forest?  He looks like he's made of wood, so the elf can talk to him, is that it?"  Erodon pouted.

"Yes, usually," said the halfling.

The elf just pointed to the creature's right leg.  The halfling winced.

"Gnah," the wood man agreed.

Up for review this week is another humanoid, a wood man.  I started out with a wire armature, over which I built up the body, working on as much detail at once as I could.  When the body was complete, I added an additional armature for the head.  The last area to be finished was the right leg, which I'd left bare.

The body is entirely lined, giving him a vaguely woody texture (or that's my story, at least).  I like how the hands and foot turned out, as they give him a clumsy look.  I'd intended to add a thumb, but figured he could manage as is.  I'd left eye sockets and an open mouth, and when I added bulging eyes and the lower set of teeth, it just helped out his overall goofy look.

I finished off with the pegleg I'd been intending to make, deciding on a look that could be interpreted as a prosthetic (nailed into place?) or just the natural healing process a wood man undergoes when he's unfortunate enough to lose a limb.  Or he could be a wood man with a flesh leg. . . .

This guy was lots of fun to work on, and I think he's among my best figures so far.
