Week 48 (8 June - 14 June 2003)
Crab

The grizzled bard again stood silent.
"So," he said, "how did you lose your finger?"
"Crab," said the captain.
"A giant crab?"
The captain shook his head.

This week's piece is another leftover putty project. I started out with a wood-textured base, which reminded me of a ship's deck for some reason (probably because of the Foundry pirates with similar bases). What would belong on a ship's deck that I hadn't already made. . . ?
I started out with the body, which is brown Kneadatite putty. I wanted a vaguely fantastic crab, so I made the shape a bit more angular than an actual blue crab's (the memory of their shape reasonably firmly implanted from childhood crabbing trips). I poked out two holes in the front of the shell and added in very short thin wires to serve as armatures of sorts for the claws, mostly to aid in their placement. I sculpted the arms next, then the feet. The big claw was sculpted first, in two stages. I did the smaller claw in one go and finally added the eyes.
This guy was lots of fun to do, and carries on the aquatic theme even further. It's not my intention to have a seagoing range of minis; I think it's just that I like exotic beasties, and there are plenty in the ocean.
