Week 49 (15 June - 21 June 2003)
Baby beholder

Stipple and Erodon froze. Directly in front of them, not ten feet away, floated a lumpy hovering sphere.
The beast leaned slowly forward, training his giant eye on one huge ant on the hill below him. The ant burst into flames. The creature giggled.
Erodon nocked an arrow.

This week's miniature is another one of my favorites. I started out with the base, to which I added the wire, with a little ball of putty at the top. I was intending to make another head or something lumpy, and I need an armature to push against.
Checking out the armature later, I realized that this was the perfect opportunity to sculpt a beholder. I added on another layer of putty, taking the time to smooth it out and make it as round as possible. Finally, I added a layer of mixed brown and green putty, again smoothing it carefully, but also cutting in a mouth and eye socket.
Next, I added the plates, most of them in one go. I attached them with my larger round-ended tool, then textured them with the smaller one. When those had cured, I added in the teeth, first the lower row, then the upper. The eye came next, followed by the protective ridge around the eye, as well as the lips.
When the beast itself was all done, I figured that I needed to do something with the lump underneath him. I added on some putty, textured it like sand, then let it cure. Finally, I added an ant, which is barely visible in the first picture, and which looks much better in person.

Finally, a scale shot. He's fairly small.
